Biochar for Haiti and the World

The border between Haiti (left) and the Dominican Republic highlights the relative deforestation of Haiti.

"Many of Haiti‘s people, the poorest in the Americas, routinely cut down trees for fuel—either to burn „raw“ or turn into charcoal. As a result, the destruction of Haiti‘s natural forests is almost total, making the Caribbean country one of the most deforested in the world. As Haiti‘s trees have disappeared, landslides have become a major concern, especially during the rainy season, and the destabilizing effects of an earthquake on soil only worsen the problem".

Biochar can play a key role in meeting critical needs in Haiti:
  • Food security: up to 220% yield increase demonstrated for maize crops in degraded soils in tropics http://www.biocharfund.org
  • Efficient fuel use/ending deforestation: with biochar it is no longer necessary to destroy the country’s forests to get enough fuel for people’s daily needs.
  • Waste reduction: Not only agricultural wastes, but building debris, plastics and municipal wastes can be used in different types of pyrolysis processes that can be optimized for energy production.
  • Sanitation: The Bain Foundation is developing a large project for sanitation and composting toilets. Biochar can make the toilets smell free and greatly increase the fertility of the resulting compost.
  • Safe stoves solution:. Some biochar stoves can cook for a family of 5 for a day with a handful of biomass fuel.
  • Reforestation: Haiti is one of the most severely deforested places on earth, a main cause of the critical clean water shortage, possibly Haiti’s worst development problem even before the quake struck. Integrated biochar agroforestry can help solve that problem.

In essence, the full range of biochar “co-benefits” are immediately applicable to relief and reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Several companies are on the ground in Haiti producing stoves and building local business opportunities for the people of Haiti. including WorldStove, Meldyniqe and Miombo . NGOs likeOhio State University’s Haiti Biochar and SOIL are also involved. Through Biochar Haiti, a subgroup of the Biochar Offsets Group on LinkedIn, we have created a network for partnership and information sharing. With the right support from business, policy makers and members of the global public, we can scale up a biochar industry in Haiti and prove the benefits of biochar in ways that can be replicated in many developing countries.
